One of the many luxuries with an A&K trip is having the best in hotels. We stayed the first two nights at the Mount Meru Game Lodge. The ex-hunting lodge has been converted to a wildlife sanctuary for injured, ill, and wayward animals that live only yards away from the rooms.

The hotel lobby, dining room, and bedrooms all have personality - kind of a rugged luxury. The beds come with a mosquito net which we thought was a good idea since we found a lizard living in the upper corner of the room. The showers run hot, and the service is friendly, albeit on the slower side - but this is vacation after all.

The biggest treat, other than the potato and leak soup, was the animal viewing. Separated by a tiny ditch, wildlife roams directly in front of you, from birds, to cape buffalo, to zebras.
