General Information
Bryce Canyon is located in the southwestern part of Utah. It is close to Zion National Park and is somewhat close to Capital Reef National Park. The park encompasses a canyon that features hoodoos - rock formations as pictured here. There is a story that explains that the hoodoos are really animals frozen into rock
The park is a nice place to visit for scenic drives with pullouts, and there are many opportunities for hiking. There is also horseback riding in the canyon. In the winter, there is cross country skiing. I have visited the park during different seasons and find it to be cooler than many of the surrounding parks.
Most of the hiking is all down hill going into the canyon, which means that in order to get out, the trail may be very steep and up hill. Even when hiking in the canyon, the trail rises and falls and winds in and out around the fantastic rock formations. Becuae of the high altitude (8000-9000 ft), it is important to bring warm clothing to slip on when the temperature begins to drop in the evening. We hope to get back there again to hike more of these wonderful trails. I am mostly interested in the Under-the-Rim Trail - 23 miles from Bryce Point to Rainbow Point with eight back country campsites. We could spend days in the canyon!
Places to Eat
During the busy season, you can eat at the Bryce Canyon Lodge in the park from April to October. The lodge closes for the winter, though the park remains open. Red Canyon Indian Store has a small grocery section and a deli, as well as rocks and souvenirs. It is a good place to stop for gas and restrooms, too. it is about 17 miles outside of the park.
