General Information

Map of the N9 and the N10 between Marrakech, Ouarzazate, and Tinghir There are three things that we saw to do in Ouarzazate: Eat lunch, visit the kasbah and possibly the Medina, and do a little shopping. We did two of the four and I wish now that we did the other two.

One interesting thing to note is that there is a movie studio there that American film companies use to make movies. I am not really sure you can tour this site, but we thought it was an interesting point.

The drive through the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech to Ouarzazate took from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. We did not stop on the way to shop at the vendors on the sides of the roads in the Atlas Mountains, but if we did this again, we would make time to stop at a few places and look at the amazing fossils, geodes, jewelry, and pottery.

Lunch

We ate lunch at a wonderful restaurant across from the kasbah. We had bread, citron chicken (lemon chicken) and couscous. We had a choice between dining inside or on the patio upstairs. The view from the patio included the kasbah as well as a panorama of the modern town. We would recommend this restaurant.

The tour of the kasbah was only a couple dollars. You can pay a little extra for a personal guide or you can wander around on your own. The guides will let you know who they are when you go to buy your admission ticket. The same people will be happy to guide you in a second trip into the Medina (old city) right next to the kasbah. Maybe this would have been worth it but we did not hire a guide.

Some of the rooms in the kasbah were white with no decorations, but some of the rooms has decorated ceilings and windows shown in the images on the left.
